Strategic HR and You

To prepare myself for this month's learning event, I decided to do a little "pre-work" in true trainer fashion. I located an article by Steve Denning on Forbes online.

Strategic HR is a relatively new concept for me. As a leader, I'm always looking for new ways to engage the trainers on my team, as well as the new employees that many of those same trainer impact through their daily work in the classroom.

One of the main point that really struck me from Denning's article was his emphasis on "shifting the role of managers from controllers to enablers, coordinating work through dynamic linking rather than bureaucratic processes". Without knowing the exact meaning of "dynamic linking" we have started to accidentally implement the concept in our teams in my office.

Dynamic Linking means;

  • Work is done in short cycles
  • Management sets priorities in terms of the goals of work in the cycle based on client needs
  • Decisions about how the work is done are to be determined by those doing the work
  • Progess is measured by direct customer feedback at the end of each cycle
We are no longer doing things the way they have always been done. We are no longer putting our team's needs first. We are not commanding, we are empowering. We are totally learner and customer focused and rely on feedback to continuously change and grow.

While this is a huge culture change, we have progressed leaps and bounds in the past few years in the way we complete our work. I can personally say there's nothing more satisfying than empowering my team to do the work needed to achieve our goals.

It may seem a bit intimidating at first, but I would encourage each of you to see how you can implement dynamic linking into your teams at your workplace. I can't wait to learn more about Strategic HR at our ATD Lincoln Learning Event on April 14th. Register now, can't wait to see you there!
